TPC Stonebrae’s Highlander Tournament

November 11, 2011

Stonebrae recently celebrated the Highlander Tournament! This annual event is our men’s member-guest match that captures the essence of TPC Stonebrae. From the start, this unique competition creates buzz that lasts all year long. Golfers are greeted by a bagpiper in full Scottish garb as they begin their three-day tournament journey through history.

The tournament itself is inspired by a mix of Scottish cultural influence and the designer of the TPC Stonebrae golf course, David McLay Kidd. The winner of the Highlander Tournament is presented with the perpetual trophy, a sword created in true Scottish fashion!

This year, two former Highlander champions, Ron Wagner and Renato O’Neal, recaptured the coveted title. They are the first pair in the tournament’s history to do so. In order to win, Wagner and O’Neal faced a 5-hole, alternate shootout, in which they eliminated other teams along the way, down to the last pair. At the final hole, Wagner and O’Neal were tied with fellow players Dr. Gunnar Salumaa and Kyle Wood, with net birdies. This meant the two teams were headed back to the 9th tee for a sudden death playoff. It was here that Wagner and O’Neal carded another birdie to win the game and become champions of the Highlander Tournament for the second time!

We want to thank everyone who came out to play and supported players along the way. This was a great event and we can’t wait to see everyone again next year!
